Virgin Moroccan Wool c. 1980
Crafted in an elegant, rustic style, the Azilal tradition is a colorful and exquisite visual record of Moroccan culture and aspects of daily life, strictly from a woman’s perspective. The Azilal often features a daring and exciting composition of abstract shapes and enigmatic symbols to share stories of weddings, pregnancy and cultural rituals to pass down to their daughters for generations.
Made from Natural virgin wool incorporating color with vegetable dyed cotton and wool, they are abstract works of art that they are often used as wall hangings and decor. A far cry from their original purpose to provide warmth to inhabitants in the steep mountain ranges of Morocco. As in the finest examples of modern art, the boucherouite rug presents a kind of direct relationship between the outer world and emotional sensitivities of the weaver. Able to express her passions at the head of a loom, the Berber woman often employs intensely resonant, otherwise un-realistic color. They continued to grow in popularity in the 80s and 90s and have been a source of inspiration to artists Le Corbusier, Paul Klee and Matisse.
